Emission attribution overview

What is Emission Event Attribution?

Emission Event Attribution allows you to ensure that detected methane emission events are correctly associated with their specific source assets. Whether you’re correcting an automated assignment or refining attribution as more information becomes available, this feature helps maintain accurate emissions inventory data for regulatory compliance and operational insights.

Why Use Emission Event Attribution?

The Problem

Without manual attribution:
  • Automated systems may misattribute emissions to nearby assets
  • Complex facilities make precise source identification difficult
  • Missing context reduces data reliability for regulatory reporting
  • Difficult to track equipment-specific performance trends

The Solution

With Attribution:
  • Manually correct misaligned emissions to ensure inventory accuracy
  • Select specific equipment within asset hierarchies for pinpoint precision
  • Add explanatory context and categorize by regulatory standards (OGMP 2.0)
  • Enable deeper insights through properly categorized emission data

Getting Started

Ready to attribute emission events? Follow these steps to correct emission source assignments. The process takes just a few minutes and immediately updates your emissions data.
1

Open Attribution Modal

Navigate to an emission event in your dashboard and click the “Attribution” button to open the source attribution interface.
2

Select Source Asset

Choose the correct source asset from the proximity-ordered dropdown list. You can select from top-level assets or drill down to specific equipment within the hierarchy.
3

Add Context and Save

Select the appropriate Source Category for OGMP 2.0 compliance, add an explanation for the attribution change, and save your updates.

Common Use Cases

Correcting Automated Misattributions

When reviewing daily emissions reports, you notice an observation assigned to the wrong asset. Use the attribution feature to reassign it to the correct source, ensuring your emissions inventory remains accurate and trustworthy.

Refining Equipment-Level Attribution

An automated alert identifies an emission near a complex facility. Drill down through the asset hierarchy (Site → Facility → Equipment) to pinpoint the exact source, enabling you to dispatch the correct maintenance team and track component-level reliability.

Preparing for Regulatory Audits

Before regulatory reviews, ensure all emissions are properly attributed with clear justifications. Add explanatory context for manual changes to demonstrate a compliant and transparent emissions management process.

FAQ / Troubleshooting

When you attribute an emission to an asset outside its current hierarchy, the system automatically recalculates timing data and updates the event status. You’ll be navigated to the new asset’s context to confirm the changes.
Yes, each emission event maintains a complete audit trail of all attribution changes. This history includes who made the change, when it occurred, and the reasoning provided for the modification.
Source Categories align your emissions data with OGMP 2.0 regulatory reporting standards. Selecting the appropriate category ensures your data meets compliance requirements and enables standardized industry reporting.
The asset list is filtered by proximity to the emission coordinates and limited to assets within your organization’s scope. Assets are ordered by distance from the emission point to help you quickly identify the most likely sources.

Best Practices

Attribution Guidelines

  • Review proximity suggestions first: Assets are ordered by distance from the emission point - the closest options are often the most likely sources
  • Use specific equipment when possible: Attribution to specific equipment rather than high-level facilities provides more actionable insights
  • Always provide explanations: Document your reasoning for attribution changes to support audit trails and team understanding
  • Verify updates immediately: Check that the data table reflects your attribution changes to confirm successful updates

Regulatory Compliance

  • Select appropriate Source Categories: Ensure OGMP 2.0 compliance by choosing the correct emission source category
  • Maintain audit trails: Always include explanatory context for manual attribution changes
  • Regular reviews: Periodically review attributed emissions to ensure ongoing data accuracy
